If you live in Leander, Liberty Hill, or Cedar Park, you’ve probably seen the "Big Box" electrical trucks roaming our streets. They have the fancy wraps, the massive advertising budgets, and—as it turns out—some of the most predatory sales tactics in the industry.
I’m Thomas Russell, owner of Russell Electric, and I recently caught one of these companies red-handed trying to scam one of my neighbors.
The "Personal" Neighborhood Catch
I was working in my own neighborhood when I saw a neighbor being quoted $10,000 to $20,000 for a full electrical panel replacement. These big companies told the homeowner their entire system was failing.
I took a look for myself. My findings? The panel was fine—the homeowner just had one bad breaker.
Wait, It Gets Worse: This Wasn't Just a Scam, It Was Sabotage 🔌🔥
Just as I was finishing up, the homeowner mentioned that the previous "big box" technician warned them the sub-panel showed signs of melting. Naturally, I opened the panel to investigate. What I found was shocking: there was zero visible damage, but nearly every single screw on every breaker had been loosened.
There is no way a panel naturally ends up with every connection loose like that. This was a deliberate attempt to ensure the panel would eventually arc, melt, or start a fire—guaranteeing that the homeowner would have to call them back, likely the very same day, in a state of emergency. This kind of "technician" isn't just trying to overcharge you; they are willing to put your family’s safety at risk to hit a sales quota.
An Industry-Wide Problem
Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. I have had numerous customers call me with the exact same story. Before you commit to replacing an entire panel, consider that it might just be bad breakers.
My Pricing: My prices range from a few hundred dollars to replace a single breaker, up to around $2,000 to replace an entire set of 30 breakers.
The Proof: My Google profile is full of 5-star reviews from local neighbors who saved over $20,000 just by getting a second opinion from me.
Why Do the "Big Guys" Do This?
It’s simple math. Those big companies have massive overhead:
Expensive office leases.
Fleet maintenance for dozens of trucks.
Huge commissions for "technicians" who are actually trained as salesmen.
Billboards, TV commercials, paid actors, radio, you name it.
To pay those bills, they can't just charge you for a simple breaker swap. They have to "find" a reason to replace your entire panel. They use fear tactics, telling you your house is at risk of burning down, just to get you to sign a five-figure contract.
Who Really Pays for the TV Ads and $75 Clicks?
The truth is, those big companies have to charge five-figure prices because their marketing budgets are astronomical. In the Austin and Leander market, "Top of Page" Google ads for electricians can easily cost $75 or more per click, and local TV commercial spots can run anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 per month just for the airtime. When a company is spending tens of thousands of dollars a month just to get their name in front of you, they can't afford to be honest. They need that $15,000 panel replacement to pay for the commercial you just watched. I don't have those bills, which is why I can focus on fixing your home instead of funding an ad agency.
Watch Thomas Russell Bust the Scam
I’m posting this because I’m tired of seeing my neighbors get taken advantage of. You can see the exact panel and the proof of the scam in my latest video.
The Russell Electric Difference
At Russell Electric, I don't have a fleet of 50 trucks or a massive call center. It’s just me—your neighbor—providing honest, expert electrical work.
Honest Diagnostics: If it’s a $200 fix, I’ll tell you it’s a $200 fix.
No High-Pressure Sales: I’m an electrician, not a salesman.
Local Accountability: I live here. My reputation in Leander means more to me than a quick payday.
Don’t Sign That Quote!
Regardless of who you call, remember this: a truly good electrical company does not need to spend a fortune on advertising to get more customers. They thrive on repeat customers, word-of-mouth referrals, and steady work. Paying for massive lead-generation campaigns is a game the "mega-companies" play to crowd out their competitors. If a big electrical company just told you that you need a $15,000 panel replacement, stop. Give me a call first for a second opinion.
