In the hustle and bustle of daily life—running a business, hitting targets, and managing the "everyday"—it is easy to forget to look up. Today, I’m taking a moment to do exactly that. I’m pausing to say a simple, sincere Thank You to God for the gift of a life well lived.
The Foundation: Family and Friends
Success means very little if you don't have a home to go to or a shoulder to lean on. To my family and my inner circle: thank you for being my anchors. I am profoundly grateful for the protection and joy that surrounds my loved ones every day.
The Growth: My Business and Customers
To my customers—the lifeblood of my passion—thank you for your trust. Watching this business grow has been a masterclass in faith. I am humbled by the provision that has kept my doors open and my vision clear.
The Lessons: Grace for Everyone
Gratitude isn't always about the easy parts. Today, I’m even offering thanks for the challenges and the people who may have wronged me.
The setbacks taught me resilience.
The critics pushed me to be better.
The "wrong turns" led me to exactly where I am supposed to be.
When you release bitterness, you make more room for blessings. I’m choosing to see every person who crossed my path as a part of a much bigger, divine plan.
"Gratitude turns what we have into enough."
To those reading this: I hope you find a moment today to count your blessings, both big and small. Life is a journey, and I am so glad to be walking it with all of you.
If you live in Leander, Liberty Hill, or Cedar Park, you’ve probably seen the "Big Box" electrical trucks roaming our streets. They have the fancy wraps, the massive advertising budgets, and—as it turns out—some of the most predatory sales tactics in the industry.
I’m Thomas Russell, owner of Russell Electric, and I recently caught one of these companies red-handed trying to scam one of my neighbors.
The "Personal" Neighborhood Catch
I was working in my own neighborhood when I saw a neighbor being quoted $10,000 to $20,000 for a full electrical panel replacement. These big companies told the homeowner their entire system was failing.
I took a look for myself. My findings? The panel was fine—the homeowner just had one bad breaker.
Wait, It Gets Worse: This Wasn't Just a Scam, It Was Sabotage 🔌🔥
Just as I was finishing up, the homeowner mentioned that the previous "big box" technician warned them the sub-panel showed signs of melting. Naturally, I opened the panel to investigate. What I found was shocking: there was zero visible damage, but nearly every single screw on every breaker had been loosened.
There is no way a panel naturally ends up with every connection loose like that. This was a deliberate attempt to ensure the panel would eventually arc, melt, or start a fire—guaranteeing that the homeowner would have to call them back, likely the very same day, in a state of emergency. This kind of "technician" isn't just trying to overcharge you; they are willing to put your family’s safety at risk to hit a sales quota.
An Industry-Wide Problem
Unfortunately, this isn't an isolated incident. I have had numerous customers call me with the exact same story. Before you commit to replacing an entire panel, consider that it might just be bad breakers.
My Pricing: My prices range from a few hundred dollars to replace a single breaker, up to around $2,000 to replace an entire set of 30 breakers.
The Proof: My Google profile is full of 5-star reviews from local neighbors who saved over $20,000 just by getting a second opinion from me.
Why Do the "Big Guys" Do This?
It’s simple math. Those big companies have massive overhead:
Expensive office leases.
Fleet maintenance for dozens of trucks.
Huge commissions for "technicians" who are actually trained as salesmen.
Billboards, TV commercials, paid actors, radio, you name it.
To pay those bills, they can't just charge you for a simple breaker swap. They have to "find" a reason to replace your entire panel. They use fear tactics, telling you your house is at risk of burning down, just to get you to sign a five-figure contract.
Who Really Pays for the TV Ads and $75 Clicks?
The truth is, those big companies have to charge five-figure prices because their marketing budgets are astronomical. In the Austin and Leander market, "Top of Page" Google ads for electricians can easily cost $75 or more per click, and local TV commercial spots can run anywhere from $2,000 to $20,000 per month just for the airtime. When a company is spending tens of thousands of dollars a month just to get their name in front of you, they can't afford to be honest. They need that $15,000 panel replacement to pay for the commercial you just watched. I don't have those bills, which is why I can focus on fixing your home instead of funding an ad agency.
Watch Thomas Russell Bust the Scam
I’m posting this because I’m tired of seeing my neighbors get taken advantage of. You can see the exact panel and the proof of the scam in my latest video.
The Russell Electric Difference
At Russell Electric, I don't have a fleet of 50 trucks or a massive call center. It’s just me—your neighbor—providing honest, expert electrical work.
Honest Diagnostics: If it’s a $200 fix, I’ll tell you it’s a $200 fix.
No High-Pressure Sales: I’m an electrician, not a salesman.
Local Accountability: I live here. My reputation in Leander means more to me than a quick payday.
Don’t Sign That Quote!
Regardless of who you call, remember this: a truly good electrical company does not need to spend a fortune on advertising to get more customers. They thrive on repeat customers, word-of-mouth referrals, and steady work. Paying for massive lead-generation campaigns is a game the "mega-companies" play to crowd out their competitors.
If a big electrical company just told you that you need a $15,000 panel replacement, stop. Give me a call first for a second opinion.
Who did it? I don't know but it was a big company that pays for adds. Don’t let a catchy slogan blind you. Some shady operators claim to be 'veteran-owned' or 'doing God’s work' just to get a foot in the door. While those values are noble, they won't stop a greedy salesman.

The flickering light, the dead outlet, the desire for a new ceiling fan—these issues often spark the "do-it-yourself" impulse. It's tempting to save a few bucks by watching an online tutorial and grabbing a screwdriver. But when it comes to electricity, that impulse is a dangerous and often expensive gamble.
Electrical work is not a typical home improvement project; it is a specialized, highly regulated trade for a crucial reason: safety. Attempting electrical repairs without proper training and licensing from a professional like Russell Electric in Central Texas can lead to catastrophic consequences.
The Immediate Dangers: Safety Hazards
The most critical danger of DIY electrical work is the immediate risk to life and property. Even minor mistakes can result in severe injuries or fatal outcomes. Electric Shock and Electrocution: A single wrong move, like touching a live wire, can send a powerful electric current through your body, causing severe burns, internal organ damage, muscle spasms, or even death.
Fire Hazards: Incorrect wiring, loose connections, or overloaded circuits are leading causes of residential fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), electrical failures account for an estimated 46,000 home fires annually in the U.S., resulting in hundreds of deaths and over a billion dollars in property damage.
Property Damage: Inadequate work can cause ongoing power fluctuations that damage sensitive modern electronics and appliances, shortening their lifespan or destroying them outright.
The Hidden Costs: Financial and Legal Risks
While the immediate safety risks are paramount, the financial consequences of DIY electrical work often far outweigh the perceived upfront savings. Costly Mistake Corrections: Professional electricians charge premium rates to diagnose and safely fix amateur mistakes. The cost of correcting faulty wiring can be significantly higher than the original professional installation price.
Voided Homeowner's Insurance: Most homeowner's insurance policies require electrical work to be performed by a licensed professional. If an electrical issue causes damage, an investigation may reveal unpermitted DIY work, potentially leading to a denied insurance claim and leaving you financially responsible for all repairs.
Code Violations and Fines: Electrical work is strictly governed by local building codes and the National Electrical Code (NEC) to ensure safety standards are met. DIY work usually bypasses the necessary permits and inspections. Code violations can result in significant fines from municipalities and force you to pay for a professional to redo the work to compliance.
Reduced Home Value and Sale Complications: Unpermitted or improperly completed electrical work is a major red flag for home inspectors and potential buyers. This can delay or derail the sale of your home and may force you to sell the property at a significantly reduced value.
